Link Between Periodontal disease & Systemic diseases
Friday, March 26th, 2010There is evidence that certain diseases may be be associated with periodontal issues. There have been reports stating that some signs and symptoms of serious diseases my appear in the mouth long before appearing in other parts of the body.
Systemic issues that occur with oral manifestations include: diabetes, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease ( artherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes), lung disease (caused by smoking), joint disease , immunocompromised states, and cutaneous disease as well as possible others.
Having periodontal disease while pregnant may result in low birthweight babies.
In regards to the cardiovascular association, it is thought that the same bacteria that builds up around the teeth can also build up around your heart. Meaning that if a person is known to have large amounts of tarter build up in the mouth, it may be likely that the same tartar causing bacteria is built up inside the heart.
During normal routine check-ups and cleanings, the dental professional is always looking for signs & symptoms of disease both intra-orally & systemically.
If you feel that you have any issue with either your teeth or any other parts in your body, please seek attention from your dentist and/or family physician.
